May 2008
New England is enjoying Spring in
full force. This year, thanks to a few weeks of very warm weather, we
jumped from snow covered ground to tulips popping up. I always look
forward to the bulbs in the garden blooming, finally seeing the efforts
of planting in October.
My trip to Ireland was great, just
enough rain to produce rainbows and beautiful skies. I was painting
along the coast near Bantry, and then Kinsale. Although every trip
to Ireland has been different there is always so much to paint! I've
been to Ireland at least twenty times and I never get tired of painting
there. The changing skies and light can completely transform the
landscape offering a great challenge to a landscape painter.
I will be painting in Stowe
Vermont this Spring and summer for a show I'll be having there near the
end of the summer. It was thirty years ago that I set out to paint in
Stowe with Frank Mason's landscape class. I continued to study art
throughout the year at college and I returned to study each June with
Frank for the next four summers. Although Stow has changed in the last
thirty years it still remains a beautiful spot to paint.
Unlike the last few summers I'm
staying close to the studio. I have a couple of large landscape
commissions, and a few portraits commissions I'll be working on.
The gardens around the studio are maturing nicely and I'm looking
forward to painting a large variety of flowers this summer.
May you
find beauty in all that you see!
Regards,
John C
